A Craven County tradition which began in 1987 continued on October 30, 2014 when over 200 active-duty military women, women veterans and guests gathered to honor women who serve or have served in various branches of the military.
The event featured Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught USAF (Ret), currently President of the Board of Directors of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, Inc. She chronicled the service of women dating back to the Revolutionary War (they were disguised as men back then). She speaks around the US on leadership and management and is a frequent guest on radio and television.
In her remarks, the General recognized Kris Engelhaupt as the first woman promoted at the dedication of the Memorial. Nearly twenty years ago Kris was promoted to Master Sergeant, just one week before the Memorial was officially dedicated by President Bill Clinton. Ms. Engelhaupt now resides in Fairfield Harbour, where husband Dan serves as a POA Director. FHPOA Director Ann Simpson and Community Manager Mystre’ Van Horn were also among the guests.
The venue for the Salute Luncheon was the Havelock Tourist and Event Center. Chairperson for the event Bee Mayo was joined by a planning committee of eighteen members, including Neuse Realty President and Co-Owner Margaret Rose. Head table floral arrangements were provided by Joy Harsen, Co-Owner of Neuse Realty, which was one of the nineteen table sponsors. Overall event sponsors were PROMISE PLACE (formerly Craven County Council on Women), Craven County Veterans Services and Eastern Region-NC Council on Women.
